NRS BRAND UPDATE
BRAND STRATEGY + CREATIVE DIRECTION
During ten years as a brand manager and marketing director at NRS, Mark helped transform the company from a 40-year-old catalog retailer and distributor to a digital-first brand manufacturer and outdoor industry unicorn. Mark led the development of pinoeering content marketing and social media programs while overseeing all brand-level communications, including writing and producing the NRS brand anthem, Drawn to Water. Deming Creative continues to serve NRS as its lead agency.
5,000 MILES OF WILD
CAMPAIGN STRATEGY
Mark joined forces with Under Solen Media and American Rivers to develop a 3-year campaign to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act in 2018.
Mark's leadership helped unite six major outdoor industry brands with two national non-profits in a large-scale grassroots campaign to protect 5,000 new miles of wild and scenic rivers. The campaign built groundswell support for additional designations by collecting 5,000 personal river stories from everyday Americans, a formula that helped protect nearly 2,000 river miles by 2019.

Deming Creative served as a campaign communications advisor during the 2018 midterm elections, shaping messaging, driving digital strategy and producing advertisements for successful candidates in Idaho, playing a prominent role in David Nelson’s 15-point victory over the incumbent in the Idaho Senate, District 5.

NON-PROFIT PARTNERSHIP
Joining forces to produce and distribute the award-winning Forest Woodward film, The Important Places, NRS and American Rivers broke the mold of conservation messaging by appealing to audiences’ emotions through storytelling while combining the financial resources, audiences and competencies of their organizations to achieve goals neither could manage alone. The film became a hashtag that became a transformative campaign for both brands.

DIGITAL STRATEGY
Mark teamed up with Current Shift Media to create a groundbreaking social sharing campaign aimed at engaging one of NRS’s most important, and influential, customer groups: professional river guides and outfitters. Partnering with aligned brands including Chaco, PrAna, Astral, and Werner Paddles, we amplified the #guidevibes message across audiences. A strong brand coalition, strategic paid promotion and compelling content combined to create a viral effect resulting in enormous reach, off-the-charts engagement, and a hashtag that took on a life of its own.
OF SOULS+WATER
CONTENT MARKETING
Working with Forge Motion Pictures and director Skip Armstrong, Mark helped create an innovative content marketing model that has had far-reaching impact in the outdoor industry and beyond. Of Souls+Water combined cutting edge cinematography with timeless storytelling to enrapture audiences and define the NRS brand ethos in the minds of millions. The five-film series was among the first examples of cinematic-quality branded outdoor films distributed for free online.
